Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving friends and family.

Today, we celebrated Annabelle's first Thanksgiving. We all had a wonderful time. The main course of our feast was a lemon-herb spatchcocked chicken. It was tasty. Dessert was pumpkin bread pudding which was delish. As you can see below, Annabelle did not get her own Thanksgiving costume this year. She got a turkey headband, which she liked to take off. You can see more of her Thanksgiving here.

Here is our Thanksgiving greeting to all of you.

And a Thanksgiving portrait with our very own Butterball.

Say Thanks to the Military

WHO: America Supports You is a Department of Defense program that recognizes citizens' support for our military and their families, at home and abroad, and connects individuals and organizations who wish to directly support the troops and their families. ASY is launching a text messaging program called "Giving Thanks".
WHAT: Giving Thanks is an interactive America Supports You program taking place during the Thanksgiving holiday to offer citizens an opportunity to say thank you to the men and women who serve this nation. Major mobile wireless providers, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile, provide access to the America Supports You Text Message program.
WHEN: People can text a message of thanks to 8-9-2-7-9, beginning at 6am EST on Saturday, November 17, and ending at midnight, PDT on November 22, Thanksgiving Day.
WHY: The goal is for people to take a moment during the Thanksgiving holiday to think about those who are serving this nation, and act in a way that demonstrates they appreciate their sacrifices. Giving Thanks offers a unifying moment for the nation, during a time in which families traditionally come together and express gratitude for things large and small that contribute to their lives. The United States currently has brave military men and women serving in 177 countries. These troops and their families will be informed about how many people have texted in their thanks and will get to see many of the messages, reminding them that people back home do care.
HOW: On Thanksgiving Day America Supports You will tabulate the number of messages sent to the troops. The volume of text messages will serve as a reminder to our military that the folks back home are grateful for their service.

About America Supports You
Since its formation three years ago, the America Supports You program has welcomed over 300 grassroots organizations and 35 corporate partners to its team. Many America Supports You team members support the troops through letter writing, care packages, helping the wounded when they return home, assisting military families, sending an email, or making a kind gesture—to learn more about how you can help please visit www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil

Happy Birthday Dad

Hey pops. Happy birthday! You would have been 61 today. You would also be a grandpa. Well, you are. Chrissy and I tell Annabelle all about you. She'll know all about you. All the grandkids will, whether they are ours or Jil's. I wish you could hold her. I know you can see her. I know she has blue eyes and blonde hair because that is what you wanted. She would be in trouble though, because we can already tell she is ticklish. You would tickle her to pieces I know. Don't worry. We will always tickle her a little extra just for you. And she'll have to say the magic words to make us stop, just like we did. We miss you so much, and love you so much too.

Can't wait to see you again someday!

Nursery Duty

Well, I am back. My apologies for the hiatus.

Saturday night, C and I had nursery duty at the church we attend. If you use the nursery for your own child, you are asked to volunteer/serve in the nursery once every couple months. We figured that is fair, so we signed up.

I don't know what C expected, but I figured we would be in the same room as AB with a couple other adults. I was wrong. We were assigned the 18-24 month room. I saw on the assignment list that we were the only couple assigned to that room. It was then that I began to get a little nervous.

We were going to keep AB in the room with us, but when we were told that a max of 7 kids may be in the room, we decided that it would be better if she was in her own room. That turned out to be a smart choice.

We weren't given too much in terms of guidance when we got there. From the written instructions we were given, it was basically don't use bad tones of voice and change their diapers every hour (which meant once per kid). I was hoping for a little more once we got there, but we were basically thrown to the wolves.

I learned that separation anxiety is a pretty big deal for kids of this age. Of the 6 total we ended up getting (2 girls, 4 boys), 3 had the separation anxiety pretty bad. Basically, we would distract the kids, the parent would sneak out, the kid would turn around after a minute and realize mommy/daddy was not still standing there, and the kid would begin to cry. That is when the reality of what we were tasked with set in. There is nothing quite like comforting a kid you don't know. At first you feel weird, but then once the kid settles down and starts to trust you, it gets better and feels more comfortable.

There was one little boy that was super cute. Was wearing a bow tie, and seemed really cool. Had no separation anxiety or anything. But...this is what his mother tells us as she gets set to leave...paraphrasing...Z sometimes gets upset. When he does, he holds his breath, and he will pass out. He turns blue and everything. I just want to let you know this is alright (I am thinking ALRIGHT???? Your kids turns blue and passes out, and this is ALRIGHT????). Just make sure to place him on his stomach, and he will start breathing again and come to. This has not happened recently, but he does do this sometimes. I just like to let people know in case it does happen (I am thinking...what have I gotten myself into????)

At this point, I am ready to turn around and go home. Thankfully, Z stayed in good spirits for the hour and a half and decided to keep breathing the whole time.

Overall though, it was a good experience learning what having sextuplets would feel like. I could not imagine twins much less 6!!! C did all the diaper changes while I consoled the two girls who were crying. She did get stuck with the nastiest diaper ever according to her. She is a champ! The kids were cool too and provided some great entertainment. Made me look forward to when AB is that age.

It did feel good though when that first parent came to pick up her kid...that meant the others weren't far behind!

Cornhole!!!

Now, you may be thinking...what the heck is cornhole? That does not sound too polite. Well, it is a beanbag toss game. You toss the bags (which are stuffed with cornfeed) into a hole, kind of like horseshoes. Check out the official site .

Anyway, for Christmas, Chrissy's dad made us a set. It is pretty sweet. Chrissy's goal is VT, and mine is reffing. He did a great job! A couple weeks ago, Chrissy and I sewed and stuffed the bags. Check them out below.
Here I am during the first practice throws.
Here are a couple action shots from the first official games at a neighborhood gathering. The game was a hit! We even brought out a spotlight to play when it got dark out.

It has been played a few times now, and will be a regular neighborhood game over the summer months!

Question...

I heard this yesterday, and thought it was pretty funny.

What are all the Dale Jr. fans going to do with their "8" tattoos? :-)

Some Things I Do Not Understand

Why can't some women take an extra five minutes at home in the morning to put on their makeup?

I saw two women this morning on my drive to work applying different forms of makeup. I can kind of understand the one at a stoplight applying powder or something with a brush. But the lady in front of me applying mascara and lipstick while the moving and looking into the visor mirror...come on now. Do these ladies keep makeup in their glove box?

Isn't this illegal? Maybe there should be makeup laws instead of cell phone laws.

Century

This is post # 100 of this blog...who would've thunk it?

Anyhow, Ward Burton and his Morgan-McLure Motorsports #4 car are sporting VT colors this weekend in Phoenix! And he made the race to boot! Also, all cars at the race will be sporting a VT memorial sticker on their cars. NASCAR has received permission from Virginia Tech to display the school’s logo on race cars for the next three weeks, in a tribute to the victims of this week’s shootings at the university's Blacksburg, Va. campus. The logo will be displayed against a black background on the “B-post” – the area just to the right of the driver’s side window net – of cars competing in Nextel Cup Series and Busch Series events at Phoenix, Talladega (April 28-29) and Richmond (May 4-5). Additionally, trucks competing in the Craftsman Truck Series event April 28 at Kansas Speedway also will display the logo.

Cell Phones

I got the information below in an email. I don't know if the info is true or not. Have you tried any of them? Are they true? Let us know in the comments...

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO.There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually bea life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST Subject: Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of yourmobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!"

THIRD Subject: Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

FOURTH How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #
A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep itsomewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
And Finally....

FIFTH Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to.
Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

Annabelle's Place

I set up a separate blog to post all of the Annabelle pictures and happenings. Check it out here...

There is a link on the right too.

Enjoy!

Welcome Home Annabelle

Well, Annabelle came home on Tuesday, March 6th. Through two nights here, she has been very good. We are all figuring out what we need to, and it has been pretty smooth going...so far ;-) She lets us know when she is hungry, or has a dirty diaper which is good. Right now though, she is very content and angelic. She is learning to sleep between meals (especially last night!) too, which allows us some rest. She is such a treasure and blessing though...downright precious. Chrissy and I could not be more happy. Thanks to you all for your notes, calls, and emails!
Here are a few pics from since she's been home...

We were storked! This guy appeared the day after Annabelle was born.

Here is Annabelle's first car ride...coming home from the hospital. We think she is a sucker. She was sucking her thumb for the first time last night before her bath.
Here is dad holding the sleeping beauty...he looks tired.
And here is mom!
Here is dad taking a picture of Annabelle on great grandma's quilt.
The first family portraits! With the stork of course!

What makes a greatest hits album?

Chrissy and I were throwing this around last night, and I want your opinion...

In your opinion, what qualifies an artist to be able to release a greatest hits album?

Is it 15 top 20 genre hits over a career? Is it a certain number of #1 singles? It is a super big mainstream artist? Is it 10 albums released? Is it 10 years in the business?

What are the qualifications?

Post your thoughts in the comments.

Pretty Cool...

I read about this kid in the Charlotte Observer this morning…

Teen pioneers `extreme sitting' sport
LAS VEGAS - It's easy to spot Aaron Fotheringham spinning and hesitating atop the rim of a half-pipe at the neighborhood skate park.
He's the one in the wheelchair, the one with the bright yellow helmet, the one who does a back flip that has made him a celebrity.
His friends slap him high-fives as they pass on their BMX bikes and skateboards. They call him "Wheels."
Adults call Fotheringham, 15, a pioneer carving a niche somewhere between BMX and skateboarding.
Fotheringham just calls it "hard-core sitting."
He was born with spina bifida, a defect of the neural tubes that affects more than 70,000 people in the United States.
He uses a custom wheelchair with welded braces, joints and crossbeams to take a pounding, a scrape bar, shock absorbers and independent four-wheel suspension, and soldered spokes on modified 26-inch downhill mountain bike wheels.
"He's constantly needing things in equipment," says John Box, president of Colours 'N Motion Inc., which provides the chairs.
Fotheringham tips over a lot. But he pulls himself up. No apologies. He jokes about starting a wheelchair company called "Crazy Cripple Industries."
"It just takes a lot of trials and errors," he says.

Check out a video of him in action, including his backflip!

The Evolution of a Nursery...

Here is the long awaited (by some) debut of the Cletus' (or Cletessa's) nursery! He/she is almost here and yes the room is ready and prepared.

This is the bedroom (an upstairs guest bedroom) before the painting started. Some taping of the door frame and floor board can be seen. Here is the room almost completely painted. The color is Antique White, which is an off-white color. The light in the ceiling light eventually was replaced by a fan.
After the room was painted, we taped it off to add shadow stripes.
And here are the walls with the shadow stripes, which are much more apparent in person than in the photo.
After the shadow stripes were laid down by Chrissy, she added by hand a chocolate ribbon loopty-loop all around the room.
After the ceiling light was taken down, I had to paint around the whole to prepare for the ceiling fan installation.
The painting has been completed...and now it is time to put together the crib. Gotta read the instructions carefully to it does not fall apart!
Putting in the last screws.
Voila! The crib is complete!
And here is the finished nursery, all ready for its resident!
Chrissy hand painted this saying on the wall over the crib.
Here is the nursery lookikng towards the window. A closet is on the right.
From a different angle.
A dresser/changing table.
Looking away from the window at the other dresser and the crib. Raggedy Anne and Andy are on the bench in the corner.
The entry door and ceiling fan.
Another picture towards the window.

So there it is...the nursery. Now we just have to fill it!
Thanks to you all who contributed to it in one manner or another!

The Final Countdown

Hmmmm...if we only know what the countdown actually was. Could be tomorrow, could be this weekend, could be March 2, could be March 16. No one really knows.

Had another doc appointment today, and everything was status quo.

Just waiting for Cletus to enter the world...who knows how long the wait will be.

Thursday, February 15, 2007

What is your guess?

When will Cletus come? Name your date. Winner will be the closest to labor day, and will get no prize :-) Well, maybe we can work out a picture autographed by Cletus.

He/she is due March 2.

My guess...February 27.

What is your guess?

Inching closer...

...to labor day. Not in September, but Cletus' (or Cletessa's) arrival.

We are excited. We are at 37.5 weeks now, and the doctor (midwife actually) told us this morning it is basically up to nature now. In NASA-speak, all systems are a go. Appointment this morning was fine...everything is as it should be. Heartbeat was strong, and the baby has dropped. Now it seems to be up to Cletus when he/she wants the birthday to be. Could be tomorrow...could be in three weeks.

We are hoping it is a little closer to the three weeks because there are still a few things at work and home we would like to wrap up.

Chrissy is still feeling good too, which is great. Me, on the other hand...just kidding.

We took a tour of the maternity center as the hospital last night. It was nice. Walking in the door though made it all seem very real.

The journey is about to begin, that is for sure!

Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers!

Super Bowl XLI Impressions

Well, it was kind of "egh" all around for me.

The pregame music/circus...ok.
The Thunderbird flyover was cool, but it was dark out, so you could hardly see them on the TV.
Opening kickoff...awesome!
Rest of the game...pretty boring overall. The Colts shoudl have won by 40.
The rain...sweet!
I thought Prince was pretty good.
It seemed like overall, the Colts were not all that excited. It was a very restrained celebration.
The commercials...overall I thought they were pretty average. I think Coke and Budweiser bought all the ad time. My faves...the Careerbuilder's were good. Connectile Dysfunction (Sprint wireless broadband card)...hilarious! The Chevy ad with the shirtless dudes washing the car in the middle of the street was top notch. The the Snickers ad with the two guys eating the same candy bar...solid humor. And Jim Gaffigan's beard combover (Sierra Mist) was pretty funny.

And one more thing...how does Michael Irvin make the Hall of Fame and Art Monk doesn't??? There is no sense in that!

Today

A couple things...

1. I think today, February 2, is one of the stupidest days...Groundhog Day. I mean, really, what is the point? A groundhog named Phil (and how many Phils have there been) gets put in a hole, and then comes out of the hole, and supposedly knows if it sees its shadow. Yeeeeaaaah right!

2. My mom sent this website to me...http://ww2.howmanyofme.com/ and if you plug your name into it, it will tell you how many people in the US have your first name, last name, and your first/last name. According to the website, only 900 (soon to be 901) out of 299,968,595 people in America have my last name. Who knows how accurate this website is, but that is a pretty rare last name is the stats are correct...pretty cool.

3. My Super Bowl (I hope I can use that term in my blog without the NFL suing me...see #4 below) pick...Colts win by over 10.

4. What a farce!

5. Don't look now, but the Bullets are in first place in the East, and have two all-stars...Gilbert Arenas is starting, and Caron Bulter is a reserve...AWESOME!

6. I passed an Autobell car wash this morning on the way to work. It was open. I wonder how much business they will do today as it is a wet, cold day here in Charlotte.

Have a great weekend!

The Library

Since Chrissy and I are both well read (insert laugh here calling myself "well read"), we both have a good number of books. Since we moved into our house almost 3 years ago, we have wanted to have a built-in bookcase built in our study. This was finally done in December, and it turned out great. We had a great contractor who worked very hard to get this done. He built all the pieces at his house, installed it over one weekend, and painted it the following week. Here is a photographic documentary from start to finish...

Here is the wall the bookshelves were installed on before the project started.
Another shot of the wall (on the right side) prior to kick-off.

In this shot, you can see the pieces that were fabricated in the contractor's work shop. He brought them over in a truck. Pretty cool stuff.

Here is the first level of the bookshelves installed. The countertop laid on top of this level.

Here is the almost complete bookshelves (trim still missing in upper right-hand corner) sans paint.

The bookshelves are complete here, the the painting has commenced.

And here it is! The completed bookshelves all painted up!

See, we do have a lot of books!

The last two photos are taken from a similar angle to the first two photos, so you can really see the difference with and without the bookshelves!
Coming soon...the evolution of a nursery!!!
